Footwear

Pickleball is a very inexpensive sport to play. Court shoes, cross-trainers or tennis shoes are recommended over running shoes as they allow for side-to side movements, jumping and quick start and stops. Ankle injuries can occur with some running shoes due to the heel being elevated. Without side support a wrong step can mean a twisted ankle or worse. Pickleball Kelowna requires proper footwear to play on our courts during Club times.

Paddles

A paddle and ball are the only other investment needed and both are quite reasonable compared to some sports. A Pickleball paddle ranges from approx $40 to $120 depending on the style. These are light-weight composite, graphite, aluminum or similar types. You can also purchase a paddle for under $40 made of wood. These are often used for teaching and starting out but 99% of players move beyond wooden paddles after the first few games. Pickleball Kelowna has a small supply of wood and donated used composite paddles for new players to use and try before making an investment. If you are not certain that Pickleball is for you, you are welcome to use one of our paddles during Club time to try the game.

Pickleballs

Pickleballs are similar to wiffleballs. They are made of plastic with holes in them and are about 1/3 lighter than tennis balls. Yellow is a popular colour (Pickleball Kelowna uses yellow pickleballs) but you can also buy white, orange and green. Make sure when you purchase balls that you buy outdoor or indoor depending on where you play as there is a difference. If you play during Pickleball Kelowna club time, the balls are supplied. For any other times on courts you would need to supply your own balls. It's best to carry one or two in your pack so that you have a backup.

Apparel

Wear something comfortable that allows you to move easily. Many sports clothes today offer dry-wicking and it can be a blessing when playing on hot summer days. Hats, visors, headbands - whatever works for you. Sunglasses and sunscreen always recommended. Something a simple as a t-shirt and shorts will work. A light jacket for when the clouds move in. Once you get playing regularly you will find you are moving around quite a bit and will want to at least be able to peel away a layer if you get too hot.

You're all decked out and Want to Play

If it's May 1st to September 30th - Pickleball Kelowna will be operating outdoors at Parkinson's Recreation Centre. Search this website for our Outdoor Schedule. If it's during this time period and you would rather play indoors - look at the Indoor Schedule. While some facilities shut down for the summer, there are some indoor venues available. Lessons schedules come and go so checkout Events and Schedules to see if and when lessons are on. If you want to join our club you can print off the current year registration form located below. You can always send us an email under contacts too if you have a question and we will do our best to get back to you with a response.

Learning the gameLearning the Game

Lessons are a great way to learn the game. If you have friends who play - ask them to teach you. Pickleballers love to share their enthusiasm for the game. Don't forget about the internet. There are many places to search for videos that show rules, tips, techniques and actual players in tournaments. Every month more and more websites are uploaded with Pickleball information, places to play around the world, tournaments and so on. Google Pickleball - you'll be amazed at what you can learn.
